Cultural safety your aged care team can actually practise

Why now

Since 1 November 2025, the new Aged Care Act and the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards are in force. Standard 1, “The Person”, asks for care that is culturally safe, trauma-aware and healing-informed, backed by evidenced workforce training, and it feeds into your Star Ratings. The free government eLearning (ALIS) is a solid start on the basics, but a tick-box module rarely changes what happens at the bedside on a Tuesday afternoon. This is the practical, whole-team depth that sits alongside it.

What the guides give your team

  • Plain-language reflection on the reflexive work: noticing your own assumptions, power and habits, rather than a crash course in “culture”.

  • Practical prompts for trauma-aware, healing-informed conversations with older First Nations people and their families.

  • Short, shared language a whole team can carry across shifts, roles and handovers.

  • A bridge beyond ALIS: the everyday depth that helps capability actually stick.

A note on evidence: the guides support your capability-building, but they don’t, on their own, produce assessor-ready evidence. Use them with your training and supervision, not instead of them.

Whole team, how it works

Pocket-sized, readable in a break, and written for everyone: care workers, cleaners, kitchen, admin and clinical staff. Cultural safety is determined by the person receiving care, so the guides keep pointing back to older people, families and community as the ones who decide what safe looks like.

On our roadmap, the series is designed to be led with First Nations co-facilitators.
